The best area to stay near Redwood National and State Parks is in the southern gateway towns of Orick or Trinidad, or the northern hub of Crescent City, depending on your itinerary and preferences.

For travelers looking to explore the southern and central sections of the parks, Orick provides convenient access. It is a small community located directly within the southern boundary of Redwood National Park, making it an ideal base for accessing popular trails like Tall Trees Grove and the Newton B. Drury Parkway. This area is particularly well-suited for those who prioritize immediate access to the redwood forests and a more secluded experience.

Trinidad, a charming coastal town just south of the main park boundaries, offers a blend of redwood access and ocean activities. It's a great option for couples or families who appreciate scenic views, a picturesque harbor, and opportunities for beach walks and tide pooling. Trinidad is known for its small-town charm, local eateries, and proximity to both redwood groves and the Pacific Ocean.

Crescent City, located at the northern end of the parks, is the largest town in the vicinity and serves as a northern gateway. It's a practical choice for families due to its wider range of accommodations, dining options, and amenities. Crescent City offers easy access to Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, including Stout Grove, and the scenic Newton B. Drury Parkway, which runs through the heart of the national park.

The best time to go to Redwood Park is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to early June) and fall (September to October), offering pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

During spring, the park's ferns and redwood sorrel are lush and green, and wildflowers begin to bloom, creating beautiful photo opportunities. The temperatures are generally mild, making it comfortable for hiking and exploring the various groves without the intense summer heat. This season is ideal for couples who want to experience the natural beauty in a more tranquil setting.

Fall brings cooler temperatures and a different kind of beauty as the deciduous trees, like maples and alders, add splashes of color to the evergreen landscape. The air is often crisp and clear, providing excellent visibility for scenic drives and photography. This period is also great for solo travelers seeking a peaceful retreat to connect with nature, as the trails are less busy.

While summer (July and August) offers warm weather, it's also the busiest time, leading to more crowded trails and accommodations.
